Chapter 12
Staring in shock, I watched as the doctor disappeared through the door and closed it behind him. My mouth was still hanging open as I turned and looked at Lornca. She'd been a welcome presence, for once, through the entire examination. I was in shock because I hadn't even had to get naked.
"That was it?" He had literally waved his green glowing hands over my abdomen, nodded once to Lornca without a word, and left the room.
"If you are dissatisfied, I could find some metal objects to probe you with."
"Uh, no. Insert that whole phrase about gift horses and mouths here."
She smiled and walked over to one of the cabinets in the examination room, opening it and pulling out a sealed, sterile med kit.
Oh. Here comes the bad part. "What's it going to be? Pills? Patch? Injection? Insertion of some sort of IUD?"
She narrowed her eyes and ripped open the package. I gulped audibly. "Give me your wrist."
Nearly shaking, I held it out for her. She reached into the sterile package and pulled out what looked like a beaded bracelet, onyx gleaming brightly under the fluorescent lighting above.
"Where does that go?" Sweat started to bead on my forehead.
She slipped it over my hand, letting it snap against my wrist. "There you go. Now you can't get pregnant as long as you wear that."
"Seriously?"
"Seriously."
"What? Does it release hormones directly into my bloodstream?"
"Nope. It is magic that keeps you from ovulating."
"Shut up."
She pulled back and gave me a stern look.
"I don't mean that literally. It's like get out. Or no way."
"I know. I am just screwing with you. I'm an elf, not a square."
"Uh⦠Sure."
"You're all set. Come back if you experience any side effects."
"Like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, uncontrollable flatulence, aches, pains, or death?"
"No. More like an increase of breast volume, or hair growing where it shouldn't."
I stared at her. "I'm not that lucky. As for the hairâ¦" I shifted into my demi form. "Not too worried about that."
"So, I see. Your form hasn't changed anymore since the last time you were here. That's promising."
"Let's hope it stays that way." I nodded for emphasis. "So, how long does it take for this thing to start working?"
She glanced down at the watch on her wrist and back up to me. "About three minutes ago."
"Really?"
"Really," she said with a chuckle and motioned me toward the door. "Have fun." She gave me a long, slow, drawn out wink.
I blushed horribly and slipped out the door, not daring to look back, and headed for the Dining Hall. My appointment had been for just before lunch, and I'd been too nervous to eat. My stomach was threatening to stage a revolt, and it felt like a land war had already erupted.
"Kaede?"
I stopped in my tracks, turning slowly and giving a little gasp as my father stood there looking from me to the door of the infirmary. "Father?"
"Are youâ¦all right?"
Nodding nervously, a billion-and-a-half excuses as to why I was in the infirmary prioritized themselves through my brain. "Hai.
